As one of the Laphroaig\u2019s founding fathers, Ian Hunter managed the distillery from 1908 to 1944, and it was during that time that the three distinct characteristics \u2014 the art of distillation, the olden soil of Islay, and the distinct personality of \u201cThe Ilecachs\u201d \u2014 fused together and created the gist of the spirit that you know today. The third part of his story is titled Source Protector, referencing the Kilbride Stream. The stream is the source of that vital liquid gold that fuels Laphroaig, so they decided to honor it with a 33-year-old non-chill filtered whisky that enjoyed a long maturing period in ex-Bourbon barrels. Bottled just under 50% ABV, the whisky carries that classic Laphroaig\u2019s peaty disposition that\u2019s backed up beautifully by a tropical, fruity hue.   <\/p>\n<p>Grab your bottle of this peaty Scotch whisky today!                            <\/p>\n<div class=\"caskers-brand-info\">\n<h2 class=\"story-subtitle\">About Laphroaig<\/h2>\n<p>                                            Situated on the southern coast of Islay, Laphroaig (pronounced La-froyg) Distillery was founded nearly two centuries ago by Donald and Alexander Johnston.  The distillery derives its name from the ancient Gaelic word &#8220;lag&#8221;(meaning hollow) and the ancient Norse word &#8220;vik&#8221;(meaning bay), which refers to its location on the shores of Loch Laphroaig.<\/p>\n<p>In 1836, Donald Johnston offered his brother \u00a3350 for his interests the distillery, and ultimately became the sole proprietor of Laphroaig Distillery.  For over a century, the distillery would remain in the hands of one of Johnston&#8217;s descendants.  In 1954, however, Ian Hunter passed away childless and bequeathed the distillery to Bessie Williamson, a secretary that had been working at the distillery for two decades.
