In 2012, Jason Barrett became the head distiller and founder of Black Button Distilling \u2013 at only 24 years old. Coming from a family of the finest men’s suit buttons makers, worn by “Presidents, Popes, Kings, and Businessmen the world over”, Barret worked in his grandfather\u2019s factory when he was younger, but soon realized he wanted to carve out his own path.<\/p>\n

After graduating, Barrett returned to his hometown of Rochester, New York, to follow his passion \u2013 make whiskey and open a craft distillery, the first in Rochester since Prohibition times. Named Black Button because of a family inside joke \u2013 Barret is color blind and the family always joked that they\u2019d need to produce only black buttons if we were to take over the family business \u2013 every small batch of Black Button spirits is made from local NY grains with over 90% of ingredients grown or produced in New York State. Everything from corn, wheat, rye, and barley to dairy cream and apple cider comes from family farms in New York State to s upport local and sustainable agriculture. They even grow their own juniper for Black Button gin at the Black Button Farm in South Bristol.
