$117.00 Availability: In StockAbout Linkwood-Glenlivet 26 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (Cadenhead Bottling) Linkwood Distillery is a whisky distillery in Elgin in the Speyside region. The distillery was built in 1821 by Peter Brown, equipped with two stills, beginning production in 1825 with potential output of 4,500 liters per year. The distillery remained operated by James Walker (who had previously worked at Arberlour) until Brown’s death in 1868, after which the distillery got under came under the control of his son, William Brown. Between 1872 and 1873 William Brown, revamped the distillery with the help of architect Methven, after replacing the old facility at the same location, the new distillery was equipped with a capacity of 227,000 liters per year. After William Brown’s death in 1893, Linkwood-Glenlivet was created by the Browns family in 1898, adopting the famous moniker in an attempt to cash in on the success of Glenlivet. The distillery was then further extended to a capacity of 454,000 liters per year. After changing hands several times, the company is now owned by the industry giant Diageo, who added two extra pairs of stills and tripled whisky production at Linkwood. They produce blends for Johnnie Walker, Haig, Bells and White Horse. Linkwood is now a workhorse of the Diageo machine producing whisky for blends such as Johnnie Walker, Haig, Bells and White Horse with only a very small 2% used for single malts. Royal Blend is matured for 2 months in Limousin oak before spending around 50 years in Tierçons barrels that are them- selves 50-60 years old (making them some of the oldest and most precious barrels in cognac) which are used exclusively for the rarest cognacs. This extraordinary blend, aged for two generations, is bottled in hand-blown glass created by a master glassblower and faithful replicas of the ones found in the family’s treasured Paradis cellar. During this time the cognac house was split between two estates, one situated in the Grande Champagne area (Boneuil) and the other in Petite Champagne (Saint-Surin). The eaux-de-vie was stocked and carefully conserved in a twelfth-century crypt. Treasured amongst a small circle of connoisseurs, Tesseron always been sought after. Tesseron is now run by the third and fourth generations of Tesserons. Alfred Tesseron is the third generation of Tesseron men with deep roots in the authentic traditions of cognac and wine production. He inherited the gift of creating elegant cognacs from his father, Guy Tesseron, having spent his youth in France, he worked in America for a leading US distributor, before contributing to one most successful Grand Crus in Paulliac, Medoc. Melanie and Justine are the fourth generations of Tesserons. Joining the family business in 2005, both having experience in the spirits industry. The doors of the Tesseron home in Châteauneuf-sur-Charente lead to a unique collection of the finest cognacs. A treasure trove of spirit dating back to the nineteenth century when Abel Tesseron acquired the property to begin his priceless collection. A tradition kept alive by his son and grandson Alfred, who run the business and well as own the prestigious Château Pontet-Canet, a Pauillac Classified Growth in 1855. Uniquely all three traditional Cognac grape varieties Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, and Colombard are still grown on the Tesseron estates. The Folle Blanche and Colombard varieties have pretty much disappeared in the region, as they are challenging to cultivate and produce small crops, but these varieties add a valuable extra dimension to the final blend. The grapes are gathered during the long, warm, sunn y days of early autumn and fermented to produce a low strength, acidic wine of approximately 8% ABV. The distillation is strictly overseen during October through March of the following year. The cognacs are double-distilled in gleaming copper ‘pot’ stills heated by a naked flame. Only the ‘heart’ of distillation makes it into the final Cognac. The Tesseron cellars —dating back to the 13th century— were once part of the crypt of the local church. Here the young ‘eaux-de-vie’ is laid to rest, left to age quietly, maturing in old oak casks for many years. The casks are crafted from ancient oaks, felled in the nearby forests of Limousin. During maturation the cognac gently oxidizes, absorbing the soft tannins from the old oak casks. Tesseron Cognacs have great complexity and depth, taking many years to develop, as the ‘maître de chai’ crafts a subtle blend of three grape varieties: Ugni Blanc (for roundness), Folle Blanche (for finesse) and Colombard for (strength and depth). The distillery is one of the oldest in Scotland, and takes its name from the Valley of the Garioch, which is situated adjacent to the distillery and is known for producing the finest barley in all of Scotland. The distillery — the most easterly in Scotland — enjoys the temperate climate and cool breeze that are ideal for the production and maturation of whisky. Glen Garioch Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made from barley harvested from the Valley of the Garioch. After the barley has been harvested, it is mashed and fermented with water drawn from the Silent Spring. In 1968, production of whisky at Glen Garioch Distillery was suspended as the area surrounding the distillery experienced a severe drought. Four years later, an incredibly pure spring was discovered upon a neighboring farm. The Silent Spring, as it came to be known, could neither be seen nor heard without modern instruments, and has been Glen Garioch’s water source for over four decades. Their malt is sourced from eastern Scotland, and are crafted in open-topped, cast iron mash tuns, and their whiskies are processed with a variation in fermentation time yielding either nuttier, or fruitier malts. Their small-batch distillation process still maintains much of the original equipment designs dating back to the 1830s. This 1992 Campbeltown single malt vintage is a Gordon and Macphail bottling, released as a part of the MacPhail’s Collection. About Gordon & MacPhail Situated in the Speyside region of Scotland, Glenburgie Distillery (pronounced glen-burg-ee) sits just off the main Aberdeen-Inverness road between the burghs of Forres and Elgin. The distillery was founded in 1810 by William Paul, who originally named it Kilnflat. In 1878, however, the distillery changed hands and was renamed Glenburgie. The distillery’s unique location and water source — it is surrounded by temperate and fertile terrain and sources water from local springs on nearby Burghie Hill — contribute to the fruity, floral whisky that Glenburgie produces. In 1935, the distillery was acquired by Hiram Walker; since then, the whisky produced at Glenburgie has been an essential component in Ballantine’s Whisky. As a result, there are few official bottlings of Glenburgie Single Malt Whiskey and the chance to obtain one is exceedingly rare. Founded in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail is a family-owned, independent bottler of Scotch whisky. The company was founded by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail, who opened “in New, Centrical, and Commodious Premises, No’s 38 and 40 South Street… a Family Grocers, Tea, Wine & Spirit Merchant,”reported the Elgin Courant on May 24, 1895. Among the company’s first employees was John Urquhart, a fifteen year-old apprentice who helped James Gordon select and purchase casks of whisky to bottle and sell at the store. When MacPhail retired in March 1915, Urquhart became a partner in the business, and when Gordon died suddenly just two weeks later, Urquhart became the senior partner. By 1950, Gordon & MacPhail held one of the largest inventories of bottled malt whiskies in the entire world, many of which were not available anywhere else. $495.00 Availability: In StockAbout Springbank 25 Year Old 1969 Vintage Nearly two centuries ago, the town of Campbeltown, located on a narrow peninsula in southwest Scotland, was considered the whisky capital of the world. Passengers arriving by sea at Campbeltown Loch — nestled between Macringan’s Point and the rocky island of Davaar — were greeted with the sails and masts of the herring fishing fleet and the smoking chimneys of nearly thirty different distilleries that called Campbeltown home. Two hundred years later, Campbeltown Loch is considerably quieter and only three chimneys continue to billow smoke — each acting as a beacon for an industry that, at one point, dominated the peninsula. In 1828, Springbank Distillery was founded on the site of Archibald Mitchell’s illicit still in Campbeltown. (Today, Mitchell’s great-great-great-grandson owns the distillery.) Within ten years, its whisky was so well-regarded that a blender by the name of John Walker purchased 118 gallons of whisky from Springbank at 43 pence a gallon. By the turn of the century — as worldwide demand for Scotch whisky seemed insatiable — distilleries throughout Scotland began cutting corners and outsourcing parts of the distillation process. Springbank Distillery, however, remained true to its Scottish heritage and today, remains one of only two distilleries in Scotland to perform every step of the whisky making process — from malting barley to bottling whisky — on the same premises. After malting and lightly peating the barley (using locally cut peat), the distillers at Springbank mill and mash it in cast-iron mash tuns that are nearly a century old. The pure spring water used during the mashing process is sourced from Crosshill Loch, which in turn is fed by springs seeping from the northern slopes of 1,100-foot tall Beinn Ghuilean. After mashing the grains, the wash is slowly fermented over the course of 70 hours — one of the longest fermentation processes in Scotland — before being distilled. Because some of the wash is distilled twice and some is distilled three times, Springbank Whisky is said to be distilled two and a half times. Following distillation, the whisky is aged in used bourbon cas ks. Since Campbeltown is located on a narrow peninsula, the strong, perennial sea winds, warmed by the gulf stream, add a slight hint of saltiness to the whisky as it ages. During Prohibition, it was one of the few whiskies still legally imported into the United States, as it was considered a medicinal spirit. Laphroaig Single Malt is made from the finest Scottish barley, which is then malted at the distillery and smoked over a peat flame. Unlike other distilleries which source peat from the Scottish mainland, the peat used to smoke Laphroaig barley is made of from the heather, mosses and lichens of Islay and adds a distinct iodine-like flavor to the whisky. After the barley has been malted and peated, it is fermented before being twice-distilled through Laphroaig’s copper-pot stills. The unique stills have an usually flat base and flat surfaces, which lends to the overall intensity of the whisky. After the whisky has been distilled, it is aged in seasoned oak barrels, which are re-charred prior to being filled. The re-charring process caramelizes the remaining sugars in the barrel, and adds slightly sweet notes of vanilla and nutty dough to the whisky. About Laphroaig Situated on the southern coast of Islay, Laphroaig (pronounced La-froyg) Distillery was founded nearly two centuries ago by Donald and Alexander Johnston. The distillery derives its name from the ancient Gaelic word “lag”(meaning hollow) and the ancient Norse word “vik”(meaning bay), which refers to its location on the shores of Loch Laphroaig. In 1836, Donald Johnston offered his brother £350 for his interests the distillery, and ultimately became the sole proprietor of Laphroaig Distillery. Pepper Elijah Pepper began distilling whiskey at the dawn of the American Revolution and during the War of 1812, he built the first log cabin distillery in Versailles, Kentucky. Eventually, he passed the family business on to his son, Oscar, and then on to his grandson, James E. Pepper. Colonel James E. Pepper was one of Kentucky’s first Bourbon aristocrats — he raced thoroughbreds in the Kentucky Derby, traveled in a private rail car and made famous the Old Fashioned cocktail. “Pepper Whisky is an old fashioned whisky, made in the old time way from a formula used for more than 100 years by three generations of the Pepper family,” wrote James, in an advertisement dated August 22, 1887. “We claim not only to make the oldest but absolutely the purest and best brand of whisky made in America, and we invite comparison with any whisky of any age.” In 1958, after the whiskey industry fell on hard times, the James E. Pepper Distillery was forced to close its doors. During its tenure, Pepper Whiskey, or “Old 1776 Whiskey” as it became known as, was a favorite of Presidents Andrew Jackson and Ulysses S. Grant, and was preferred by Daniel Webster, a leading American statesman and senator from Massachusetts.
