    About Mortlach 70 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

    Situated in the heart of the Speyside region of Scotland, Dufftown is known as the Whisky Capital of the World. The village, which produces more malt whisky than any other town in Scotland, is home to seven distilleries, the oldest of which is Mortlach Distillery.

    Mortlach Distillery was founded in 1823 by James Findlater, together with his friends Alexander Gordon and James Macintosh. In 1831, however, Findlater sold the distillery to John Robertson for the paltry sum of £270. In 1837, it was sold again to John and James Grant, who dismantled the distilling equipment and shuttered the doors to the distillery. For the next two decades, the building was used first as a brewery, and then, rather curiously, a church. In 1851, however, the distillery began producing whisky once more. Even at the time, it was an impressive distillery, according to the Wine & Spirits Trade Record. The distillery had two still-houses: “In one there are three old-fashioned stills, in the other there are three larger stills, installed in 1897.” The distillery also had “four gigantic malt floors, and the largest mash tun in the district.”

    In 1964, the distillery was largely rebuilt and today, houses a unique configuration of six stills. The stills — three wash stills and three spirit stills — are each different shapes and sizes (one still is nicknamed “Wee Witchie” because it is shaped like a witch’s cap), and aren’t paired together. This unusual configuration, together with the partial triple distillation method used at Mortlach Distillery, produces a whisky that is full-bodied and meaty.

    Mortlach 70 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is part of Gordon & MacPhail’s “Generations” label, and was first put into the cask on October 15, 1938 by John Urquhart, the grandfather of Gordon & MacPhail Joint Managing Directors, David and Michael Urquhart. Matured in a Spanish oak, ex-bodega sherry hogshead cask, the whisky was bottled exactly 70 years later, yielding 54 full-size bottles at cask strength (46.1% ABV).

    “This is a very special day for us, one we’ve literally been anticipating for generations. Our family has been in the whisky business for a long time, with each generation building and handing on a lifetime’s expertise to the next,” say David and Michael Urquhart.

    Mortlach 70 has a delicate aroma of rosewood, black cherries, dates and licorice. The palate is fresh, with starburst notes marrying elegantly with sherried oak and peat smoke, and leads to a supple finish accented by big notes of peaches, saddle leather and candlewax.

    Inspired by an entrepreneurial flair and a youthful enthusiasm, the Harvey brothers began construction of the Bruichladdich (pronounced brook-laddie or broo-lah-dee) Distillery in 1881. The brothers were descendants of a dynastic whisky family — their ancestors had already owned distilleries in Scotland for over a century. Today, Bruichladdich Distillery (Bruichladdich means “rocky shore” in ancient Gaelic) remains situated on the shores of Loch Indaal on the island of Islay, and continues to use much of the original equipment installed by the Harvey brothers.

    The modern Bruichladdich Distillery is known as the most experimental and adventurous of the Scottish distilleries, and the Bruichladdich Octomore Series represents a singularly unique expression in the world of Scotch whisky.

    Bruichladdich Octomore 7.1 is the distillery’s final release under Master Distiller Jim McEwan’s tenure. The whisky takes its name from Octomore Farm, a farm situated high above the village of Port Charlotte, just two miles away from Bruichladdich Distillery (the farm provides all of the barley used to create the whisky). Harvested from mainland Scotland, the barley used in this release is then malted before being peated to an absurdly high 208 phenol parts per million, making it one of the peatiest whiskies in the world.

    After the barley has been peated, it is mashed using water drawn from the Bruichladdich loch. The water is soft and devoid of minerality, which makes it ideal for mashing and fermenting the barley. Following fermentation, the wash is twice distilled through Bruichladdich’s 130 year-old, 20-foot tall, diamond-shaped stills. The Victorian-era stills produce whisky that is notably floral and elegant. “We have a distillery,” says Jim McEwan, the master distiller at Bruichladdich, “and we know how to use it.”

    Once the whisky has been distilled, it is matured for five years in American oak before being bottled at 119 proof without the use of chill filtration or artificial coloring. As a result, Bruichladdich Octomore 7.1 has a sandy color, with aromas of sea spray, caramel, lemon peel and tobacco. The palate is filled with bright notes of peach, citrus fruits and honey, and is complemented by heavier notes of chimney smoke and leather. The peat is evident on the finish, with bold flavors coming together for a long, memorable sensation.

    “The feeling is of long summer nights turning cooler as autumn approaches. This dram will transport you to Islay, to watch the sun setting over the sea while breathing in the peat smoke hanging in the air,” says McEwan.

    About The Macallan 42 Year Old 1969 Duncan Taylor Rarest Single Malt Scotch Whisky

    Situated on a ridge above the banks of the River Spey, the Easter Elchies House has been the spiritual home of The Macallan for over two centuries. In 1820, Alexander Reid began renting the home from Sir Lewis Grant of Grant. Reid was a farmer, and soon after he sowed the fields surrounding the home with barley, Reid established the first licensed distillery on the estate, which he named Macallan after an ancient church that had been destroyed by fire during the 15th century. In the winter — when there was little activity on the farm — Reid would ferment and distill his excess grains into whisky, which was often drunk straight from the still or sold to travelers passing through the town.

    Today, the Macallan Estate encompasses 370 acres, 95 of which are devoted to the production of The Macallan Estate’s Minstrel barley (a single acre produces about 2.5 tons of barley each year, enough to yield 1,800 bottles of The Macallan). In addition, the distillery contracts with farmers to purchase barley that is low in nitrogen and high in starch, resulting in a rich and oily whisky.

    After the barley is harvested in late August and early September, it is malted before being mashed in one of The Macallan’s two mash tuns, a process that takes between four and eight hours. Then, the barley is fermented with a specially cultured yeast before being distilled twice through copper-pot stills. The copper comprising the stills acts as a catalyst, and enhances the formation of sweet esters while minimizing impurities such as sulphur. In addition, the curiously small stills — some of “the smallest stills within the Scotch whisky industry,” according to production manager Alexander Tweedie — produce a whisky with a heavy, oily flavor.

    Following distillation, The Macallan distillers remove the heads and tails of the whisky and collect approximately 16% of the spirit to fill into casks for maturation. This “cut,” which is among the highest of any Scottish distillery, results in a more full-bodied and and rich whisky.

    Bottled by Duncan Taylor (an independent, family-run bottler that has been named “Independent Bottler of the Year” by Whisky Magazine), Macallan 42 Year Old Rarest Single Malt Sc otch Whisky (Duncan Taylor Bottling) was originally distilled on September 10th, 1969, and subsequently bottled on January 24th, 2012 from Cask 6860. Set in a magnificent crystal decanter, the whisky’s fruity aromas of blood orange, peach and dark cherries lead to an exquisite, oily palate complete with delicate oak, star fruit, chocolate and pomegranate seeds. Unlike its predecessor, this fifth expression is more traditional, with less wine influence. Finding the right cask combination is an art of alchemy, and the exact method of this release is kept secret. All that is known is that the youngest whisky was distilled in 1992. It is bottled at cask strength.

    About Gordon & MacPhail

    Situated in the Speyside region of Scotland, Glenburgie Distillery (pronounced glen-burg-ee) sits just off the main Aberdeen-Inverness road between the burghs of Forres and Elgin. The distillery was founded in 1810 by William Paul, who originally named it Kilnflat. In 1878, however, the distillery changed hands and was renamed Glenburgie. The distillery’s unique location and water source — it is surrounded by temperate and fertile terrain and sources water from local springs on nearby Burghie Hill — contribute to the fruity, floral whisky that Glenburgie produces.

    In 1935, the distillery was acquired by Hiram Walker; since then, the whisky produced at Glenburgie has been an essential component in Ballantine’s Whisky. As a result, there are few official bottlings of Glenburgie Single Malt Whiskey and the chance to obtain one is exceedingly rare.

    Founded in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail is a family-owned, independent bottler of Scotch whisky. The company was founded by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail, who opened “in New, Centrical, and Commodious Premises, No’s 38 and 40 South Street… a Family Grocers, Tea, Wine & Spirit Merchant,”reported the Elgin Courant on May 24, 1895. Among the company’s first employees was John Urquhart, a fifteen year-old apprentice who helped James Gordon select and purchase casks of whisky to bottle and sell at the store. When MacPhail retired in March 1915, Urquhart became a partner in the business, and when Gordon died suddenly just two weeks later, Urquhart became the senior partner. By 1950, Gordon & MacPhail held one of the largest inventories of bottled m alt whiskies in the entire world, many of which were not available anywhere else.

    Strathclyde distillery was built on the site of an old cotton mill, in 1927 by London distiller Seager Evans. The facility was originally built as a neutral grain spirit producer for gins. Strathclyde is now Glasgow’s most prosperous distillery. In 1936, Seager Evans moved made the move into the Scotch industry with the purchase of the brand Long John.

    Strathclyde distillery sits in the Gorbals located in the Lowlands, on the south side of the River Clyde opposite Glasgow Green park. Over the years, Strathclyde underwent numerous ownerships, before ending up within Allied Distillers. By this time Strathclyde had been supplying some of their single grain to big names such as Ballantine’s and Teacher’s. Strathclyde is now part of the Chivas Brothers stable.

    After Port Dundas shut down in 2009, Strathclyde was the only remaining whisky distillery in Glasgow for several years. Strathclyde sources its water from the Loch Katrine. Their whiskies are distilled through a 2 column system that has an analyzer and rectifier column, the columns once used for neutral production have since been mothballed.

    The entire grain whisky production at Strathclyde is intended for developing blends, but there have been independent and private bottlings. This single grain Strathclyde whisky was released by Cadenhead’s. W.M. Cadenhead is an iconic whisky bottler. The original company was established by William Cadenhead in 1842.

    This special small batch release was matured in a single fresh first fill bourbon cask for 26 years. Only 168 bottles of this whisky exist in the world. “A fantastic rich aromatic, smooth Strathclyde…This vintage has a deep orange amber color that almost looks like sherry cask with some rather amazing sherry-like notes after it’s opened in the glass for about 10-15 mins. Very enjoyable indeed” (producer).

    The nose is rich and full. Golden rum notes begin the journey with this elegant single grain. Roasted peanuts with fresh brandy snaps and banoffee pie. Some aniseed notes with hints of treacle toffee, some fresh mint lifts the palate slightly, followed by banana yogurt to give the middle palate a nice big mouthfeel.     About Linkwood-Glenlivet 26 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (Cadenhead Bottling)

    Linkwood Distillery is a whisky distillery in Elgin in the Speyside region. The distillery was built in 1821 by Peter Brown, equipped with two stills, beginning production in 1825 with potential output of 4,500 liters per year. The distillery remained operated by James Walker (who had previously worked at Arberlour) until Brown’s death in 1868, after which the distillery got under came under the control of his son, William Brown.

    Between 1872 and 1873 William Brown, revamped the distillery with the help of architect Methven, after replacing the old facility at the same location, the new distillery was equipped with a capacity of 227,000 liters per year. After William Brown’s death in 1893, Linkwood-Glenlivet was created by the Browns family in 1898, adopting the famous moniker in an attempt to cash in on the success of Glenlivet. The distillery was then further extended to a capacity of 454,000 liters per year.

    After changing hands several times, the company is now owned by the industry giant Diageo, who added two extra pairs of stills and tripled whisky production at Linkwood. They produce blends for Johnnie Walker, Haig, Bells and White Horse.

    Linkwood is now a workhorse of the Diageo machine producing whisky for blends such as Johnnie Walker, Haig, Bells and White Horse with only a very small 2% used for single malts. This 26-year-old Linkwood is from independent bottler Cadenhead’s as a part of their small batch series. This whisky was produced in 1989 and bottled in 2016.

    Situated in the village of Old Meldrum in the Scottish Highlands, the Glen Garioch (pronounced Glen Geery) Distillery was founded in 1797 by John and Alexander Manson. The distillery is one of the oldest in Scotland, and takes its name from the Valley of the Garioch, which is situated adjacent to the distillery and is known for producing the finest barley in all of Scotland. The distillery — the most easterly in Scotland — enjoys the temperate climate and cool breeze that are ideal for the production and maturation of whisky.

    Glen Garioch Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made from barley harvested from the Valley of the Garioch. After the barley has been harvested, it is mashed and fermented with water drawn from the Silent Spring. In 1968, production of whisky at Glen Garioch Distillery was suspended as the area surrounding the distillery experienced a severe drought. Four years later, an incredibly pure spring was discovered upon a neighboring farm. The Silent Spring, as it came to be known, could neither be seen nor heard without modern instruments, and has been Glen Garioch’s water source for over four decades. Once the barley has been fermented, it is distilled twice — first through Glen Garioch copper-pot wash still and then again through its spirit still.

    This Adelphi Selection is non chill filtered, and bottled without any additives. Each bottling is very limited, each cask yielding anywhere between 100 and 700 bottles. “Identifying only the very best casks allows us to offer a range of styles and regions with our panel of professional ‘noses’ chaired by world authority on Scotch whisky and Master of the Quaich, Charles MacLean” (producer).     The whisky is made exclusively from Scottish barley that is dried directly over a peat flame. Once the grains have been dried, they are milled and mashed with water drawn from Mary’s Well before being fermented for nearly four days in washbacks made of Oregon Pine. Following fermentation, the wash is distilled twice, first through one of Tobermory’s copper-pot wash stills, and again through one of Tobermory’s copper-pot spirit stills.

    Situated on the Isle of Mull, the quaint village of Tobermory was founded in 1788 by fishermen who began using it as a resting place during their fishing expeditions in the Sound of Mull.     Glen Scotia’s line-up showcases their versatility, as they produced a range of peated and non-peated whiskies, two styles characteristic of Campbelltown. Their malt is sourced from eastern Scotland, and are crafted in open-topped, cast iron mash tuns, and their whiskies are processed with a variation in fermentation time yielding either nuttier, or fruitier malts. Their small-batch distillation process still maintains much of the original equipment designs dating back to the 1830s.

    About Gordon & MacPhail

    Situated in the Speyside region of Scotland, Glenburgie Distillery (pronounced glen-burg-ee) sits just off the main Aberdeen-Inverness road between the burghs of Forres and Elgin. The distillery was founded in 1810 by William Paul, who originally named it Kilnflat. In 1878, however, the distillery changed hands and was renamed Glenburgie. The distillery’s unique location and water source — it is surrounded by temperate and fertile terrain and sources water from local springs on nearby Burghie Hill — contribute to the fruity, floral whisky that Glenburgie produces.

    In 1935, the distillery was acquired by Hiram Walker; since then, the whisky produced at Glenburgie has been an essential component in Ballantine’s Whisky. As a result, there are few official bottlings of Glenburgie Single Malt Whiskey and the chance to obtain one is exceedingly rare.

    Founded in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail is a family-owned, independent bottler of Scotch whisky. The company was founded by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail, who opened “in New, Centrical, and Commodious Premises, No’s 38 and 40 South Street… a Family Grocers, Tea, Wine & Spirit Merchant,”reported the Elgin Courant on May 24, 1895. Among the company’s first employees was John Urquhart, a fifteen year-old apprentice who helped James Gordon select and purchase casks of whisky to bottle and sell at the store. When MacPhail retired in March 1915, Urquhart became a partner in the business, and when Gordon died suddenly just two weeks later, Urquhart became the senior partner. By 1950, Gordon & MacPhail held one of the largest inventories of bottled malt whiskies in the entire world, many of which were not available anywhere else.
